Belle Vale Primary School Y4 Malkin Moonlight Mini Challenge
In Y4 we have thoroughly enjoyed reading Malkin Moonlight. We created a very large map depicting some of the key moment in Malkin's life: being given his name by the moon, meeting Roux, battling the mink, saving the swan, the pub being sold, proposing and marrying Roux, then finally realising she has been taken away! Each of us chose a quote we thought summed up Malkin's feeling at each point in the story. Thinking about Malkin's 'sixth sense' we also chose colours that we felt matched Malkin's emotions such as love, pain, anger and confusion.

The Wild Swans update Carlton Colville Primary Year 4
The Year 4 Reading Gladiators at Carlton Colville Primary have loved reading The Wild Swans, a book which has sparked all sorts of discussions! The author’s use of language has been commented on many times, as it sounds quite different to what we’re used to reading with modern texts. Words such as hymnal had us all debating, so did the idea that toads could be used to make someone less ‘virtuous’. In the picture, you can see the Gladiators considering words to describe Elisa’s character. The liveliest debate so far in the Gladiator journey was started when the challenge was set to order these words from most important to least important to the story. There was a lot of reasoning in the room while each of the Gladiators took it in turns to try to persuade the group to agree with what they thought. Thanks to some compromising, we managed to agree to an order in the end, but it was a task which could have been debated all week!

Carlton Colville Primary Year 4 Little Bits of Sky Update
Carlton Colville Primary’s Year 4 Reading Gladiators have had so much to discuss with their latest book, ‘Little Bits of Sky’. They have loved going on a journey with Ira and seeing the world from a different point of view. Whilst they have felt like they’ve been on ‘an emotional roller coaster’, they are mature enough to realise that that’s what a great story does and they had faith in S.E. Durrant that it would all be okay in the end! Here they are making a start on their memory book mini-challenge, which is looking to be a detailed and thoughtful team effort.

7th Feb 2018, 10:38amIt is an emotional journey for the reader but what a satisfying read it is. It's great to see you working as a team - you look engrossed in your work.28th Feb 2018, 2:40pmYour group are so absorbed in their work! At The Bellbird, the children have also been fascinated by the life of children in care and have been taken on a journey which at times was quite uncomfortable for them. Some of the parents of the gladiator children have also read the book and were impressed with the way S.E. Durrant handled the themes. The Year 4 Gladiators at The Bellbird are looking forward to seeing the finished versions of the memory book pages from Carlton Colville. Geraldine Hines -
Malkin Moonlight at The Bellbird
The Reading Gladiators loved reading this book and were keen to complete the challenge. One of the children is very keen on origami so the group decided to create a cat collage. When our local MP, Heidi Allen, came to open our new school library the Gladiators were able to share some of their work with her.
